Implanted Smart Chips Could Ease Chronic Pain

An article on Engadget describes the recent work by Australian researchers at the National ICT Australia which uses "smart" chips to measure and respond to neurological activity in the spine. These chips, part of a system that can also provide electrical pulses that prevent pain signals from reaching the brain, could provide relief to people suffering from chronic pain conditions. The implanted system is expected to enter the human trials phase sometime next year.
