In a new book, Black Code: Inside the Battle for Cyberspace, by Ronald Deibert, director of the Citizen Lab, an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Toronto, examines cyberespionage based on his lab's research over the last decade or so. Among the many point he raises, he finds that we give the Chinese too much credit for recent cyber attacks. It's not that they aren't attacking; it's just that they are not the elite criminal hackers we are sometimes lead to believe. And that misunderstanding is affecting our current social, political, and economic relationship with that country.
